A Backoff Mechanism to Achieve Full Organization?

چکیده
The design of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for multi-hop ad hoc networks is challenging as each network entity has only a local view of the network. Consequently, efficient, decentralized, MAC protocols are needed. In this paper, we demonstrate that a protocol based on a local backoff mechanism can globally organize the transmissions in a network. Moreover, we show that such a protocol can achieve the highest level of spatial reuse.

A backoff differentiation scheme for contention resolution in wireless converge-cast networks
Wireless converge-cast networks (WCNs), such as data collection-based wireless sensor networks, exhibit certain phenomena called funneling effect, where the region close to the sink node is heavily overloaded. In this paper, we identify that the funneling effect occurs not only close to the sink but also within the network region where nodes have collision and induce heavy traffic to relay; we ...
متن کاملHow Penalty Leads to Improvement: a Measurement Study of Wireless Backoff
Despite much theoretical work, different modifications of backoff protocols in 802.11 networks lack empirical evidence demonstrating their real-life performance. To fill the gap we have set out to experiment with performance of exponential backoff by varying its backoff factor. Despite the satisfactory results for throughput, we have witnessed poor fairness manifesting in severe capture effect....

The IEEE 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) employs a Medium Access Control (MAC), called Distributed Coordination Function (DCF), which is based on Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA). The collision avoidance mechanism utilizes the random backoff prior to each frame transmission attempt. The random nature of the backoff reduces the collision p...
متن کاملPer-Flow Fair Media Access Control in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks
IEEE 802.11 [1] is the most widely used protocol in the WANETs. The basic media access control mechanism of IEEE 802.11 is the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) with Carrier Sensing Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA). The DCF includes a backoff algorithm called Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB). The BEB prefers the last successful node because the Contention Window (CW) size of ...

Channel capacity is a scarce resource in wireless networks. However, the way in which IEEE 802.11 DCF uses random backoff time to resolve the channel contention leads to inefficient utilization of this scarce resource. In particular, in a highly loaded network, the portion of channel bandwidth wasted due to collisions is significantly high. Prior work proposes various ways to improve the perfor...
